College of Design
Established in 1976, and named in honor of the Goldstein sisters, The Goldstein Museum of Design (GMD) is a research center in the College of Design and the only design museum in the Upper Midwest. Through our teaching collection of 36,000+ multidisciplinary objects and free, public exhibitions on the St. Paul and East Bank campuses, we advance learning in design history and practice for students and the greater community. Numbering over 22,000 items, and dating as far back as 1760, apparel and accessories make up the largest part of the museum’s collection. In 2004, the International Institute of Minnesota donated to the GMD 659 pieces of clothing from around the world.

Goldstein Museum of Design is named in honor of two sisters who changed the way Americans value design. Harriet and Vetta Goldstein taught Related Arts in the School of Home Economics at the University of Minnesota from 1910 until 1949, introducing students to the new idea of design harmony and the process of formal analysis to solve design problems. In 2016, Goldstein announced that the home would be donated to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) upon his death. The donation includes almost everything in the house including the furniture and art. It is one of the most culturally and architecturally important homes in the area.
It’s located in L.A.’s Beverly Crest neighborhood and it’s a private property. Unfortunately, the Sheats-Goldstein house is a private property, so it’s not open to the public. Exclusive parties and events are held at Club James round the clock; Rihanna celebrated her 27th birthday party here, with Jay Z, Mick Jagger, and Leo DiCaprio in attendance. The house has also served as a setting for fashion ads and commercials, glamorous events, and, well, porn flicks. James Goldstein entrusted the home, its surrounding estate, as well as a 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and his eclectic wardrobe to the museum. This way, his and Lautner’s legacy will continue to inspire and attract curious minds and aspiring architects and designers.

In addition, Govan says plans to open a museum in South Los Angeles, which stalled out during the pandemic, are slowly getting back on track. Businessman James Goldstein has been the sole owner of the Sheats-Goldstein house since he purchased it in 1972. He continues to spend time at the residence, but also often rents it out for photoshoots or as filming location for Hollywood movies or TV shows. Back in the day, he’s also said to have had an affair with American actress, singer, and Playboy Playmate Jayne Mansfield, who was married to someone else at the time. Still, he never married, and he has no children, which is why the decision to donate his unique home to LACMA came naturally. The house is so impressive that in 2021, Kanye West aka Ye enlisted James Goldstein to help him design and spruce up his newly purchased Malibu mansion.
Parsons had begun a series of groundbreaking programs in fashion, interior design, and graphic design that combined art concepts with industrial design. The Goldstein sisters adapted Parsons’ modern concept of design to their teaching at the University and to their textbook Art in Every day Life (1925, four editions,11 reprintings). From Vera Neumann to Vera Wang, from sportswear to evening wear, and from monsters to space suits—our previous exhibitions feature an array of designers and objects. The Goldstein Museum of Design is dedicated to sharing the value of design through its 34,000+ multidisciplinary objects.
